Annaprashan Puja
Annaprashan Puja, also known as Annaprasana or Anna Prashan Sanskar, is a Hindu ritual that celebrates a baby's first intake of solid food, typically rice. It is usually performed when the baby is between 6 to 8 months old and signifies the transition from a milk-only diet to solid foods.
This sacred ceremony is one of the key Sanskars (sacraments) in a child's life. The word "Annaprashan" literally means "grain initiation"—‘anna’ meaning food or grain and ‘prashan’ meaning feeding.
Key Rituals of Annaprashan Puja:
- Purification rituals and Vedic mantras performed by a priest.
- Offering of the first bite of food (usually kheer or plain rice) to the baby by parents or elders.
- Puja to seek blessings from the deities, ancestors, and family elders.
- Special meal prepared and served to relatives and friends as part of the celebration.
Annaprashan is a joyful and meaningful event that blesses the child with health, happiness, and prosperity, and marks an important step in the baby’s growth within the family and society.
